Creatine Kinase

« Back to Glossary Index

An enzyme produced by skeletal tissue and heart muscle. One form, creatine kinase-MB, is produced only by the heart. The amount of creatinine kinase-MB circulating in the blood is usually elevated when there has been damage to heart muscle, such as with a heart attack. Testing for this enzyme is one way to determine if someone is having a heart attack.
