Graph theory

« Back to Glossary Index

Graph theory is branch of mathematics that deals with the process of modeling the topology of networks to describe a complex system of interactions based upon network elements (nodes) and the connections between nodes (edges). In neuroscience, graph theory has been applied to studying networks within the brain. This approach looks at brain network topology to describe functional relationships between brain areas and the interactions give rise to various cognitive processes.
